One of the most important things to remember about your hair during the summer is that it doesn’t need to be washed too often. In general, do *NOT* shampoo your hair daily! Shampooing not only gets the grime out of your hair, but it also strips the hair of its natural oils. In the summer, people often feel sweaty and sticky from the Tennessee humidity, but that doesn’t mean your hair is getting dirty enough to wash it every day. When you do shampoo, use cold water, which protects your hair from becoming dry or frizzy. The following time you shower, simply wet your hair, massage some conditioner into the ends, and rinse. If your roots seem slightly oily, use a dry shampoo like our Bioessence Pure Renew, Bumble & Bumble Hair Powder, or Kérastase Powder Buff to extend the life of your style between washing. If your scalp seems dry or flaky, use an exfoliating product like the Kérastase Chronologiste pre-shampoo, which includes natural walnut shell pieces for exfoliation instead of environmentally harmful plastic microbeads.

We can’t stress this enough: Condition your hair! Dry hair gets damaged more easily by the elements and becomes frizzy and tangled. Conditioner helps seal the hair shaft and protect it from sun and water. If you spend a lot of time at the pool, put some of your favorite conditioner in a spray bottle with some water, shake to mix, and apply generously before swimming. Think of your hair like a sponge. If you jump into a chlorinated pool with dry hair, it will soak up that chlorine just like a sponge. Blondes, you know what this means for you: green hair. Ain’t nobody got time for that! However, if you soak your hair with water and conditioner first, the hair won’t absorb as much pool water. Be sure to also rinse the hair and re-apply conditioner after swimming. For color treated or naturally dry hair, use a moisturizing masque like the Kérastase Chroma Riche Masque or the Bumble & Bumble Quenching Masque 1-2 times per week. Furthermore, consider getting a nourishing Kerastase treatment with your next salon shampoo, which will leave your hair moisturized for a couple weeks.

If you put sunscreen on your skin, you should also think about sunscreen for your hair! Our hair gets just as damaged by UV rays as our skin, but we often don’t realize it because it’s painless, not at all like a sunburn. However, many of you have probably noticed the lightening and drying effects of the sun on your hair over time. To protect your hair, use products that have sunscreen built in. To moisturize and protect at the same time, use a leave-in conditioner that has UV protection, like our Bioessence Revive or Bumble & Bumble’s Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Primer. Most of the Kérastase shampoos and conditioners contain sun protectants, but we especially recommend the Chroma Riche and Chroma Captive shampoos and conditioners because they also include heat protectants. For curls that need a little firmer hold, try spraying the new Bioessence Shape hair spray into damp hair. It won’t leave a white or crusty residue, like other hairsprays, and it has UV protection. At the very least, if you don’t want to use SPF products, cover your hair with a hat or scarf when out in the sun.

The biggest summer hair complaint is FRIZZ. Keep in mind, dry hair absorbs humidity from the air and becomes frizzy, so to best fight frizz, ensure that your hair is properly moisturized. A new product that we have to combat frizz is Kérastase L’Incroyable. It blocks 65% of humidity from the hair and extends the life of your blow-out. Additionally, if you have thin but frizzy hair, our stylists recommend the Kérastase Fluidissime spray to weigh down fly-aways without a greasy feel. For thick frizzy hair, we recommend the Kérastase Keratine Thermique, which will soften and moisturize coarse locks. However, many of our stylists agree that the best way to deal with humidity is to embrace it by sporting your natural texture with a tousled style. Rather than blow-drying and straightening the hair, which simply adds more heat (and therefore, more damage) to the hair, try air-drying or diffusing the hair and scrunching with a styling product like Kérastase’s Spray-a-Porter or Bumble & Bumble’s Surf Spray to enhance your natural wave pattern and achieve a beachy look.

Last, but certainly not least, be smart about styling your hair this summer. It’s best to brush your hair while it’s wet, and be sure to use a gentle brush, like Tangle Teezer, to prevent damage.  Instead of putting your hair up in a ponytail or bun, try braided styles. This tip is especially useful if you enjoy boating, as braids won’t get tangled by the wind like ponytails do, but it is also a great tip in general, because braids are usually secured at the ends of the hair, rather than in the middle, which puts less stress on the hair shafts. Additionally, use soft elastic bands that won’t break your hair, such as the locally-made Indie Girl hair ties and head bands we carry at Salon Visage and Spa Visage. Another good tip is to have more layers cut into long hair during the summer, as that will make your hair feel lighter and cooler, and will also allow you to show off your natural waves, if you want to try a tousled look like we talked about previously. Finally, since hair grows faster in the summer, it also wouldn’t be a bad idea to plan on getting hair-color and/or haircuts a little more frequently!
